Central
Cabarrus Bible Teaching Association is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt
organization that raises and provides funds to pay one full-time Bible
teacher at Central Cabarrus High School in
Concord, NC.
The officers and Board of
Directors are volunteers who donate their time. CCBTA
solicits contributions from interested individuals and
organizations in the community.
Central Cabarrus High School
has offered academic course in Bible to students in grades 9 to
12 each year since 1982.
In 1988, due to increased
enrollment, Bible classes were offered full-time. In 1995,
again due to increased enrollment in Bible classes, a part-time
teacher was added. In 2004, a total of two full-time
teachers were added, due to the number of students enrolled in
Bible classes. As of school year 2009-2010, we are
back to just one teacher, Mrs. Amy Hicks, who has been at CCHS
since 1986.
CCBTA is supported by
parents, educators, alumni, businesses, the Cannon foundation,
community agencies, and individuals.
Why teach the Bible?
The Bible has had a profound
influence on American community life, law, literature, music,
art and history. The Bible has also had a significant
effect upon world history and culture. Since a complete
education must include the religious and Biblical influences on
world and American culture, the Central Cabarrus Bible Teaching
Association is organized to provide funds for the teaching of
academic courses in Bible to students at Central Cabarrus High
School.
Teaching academic Bible courses
in public education is a legal enterprise as ruled by the
Supreme Court. In Abington Township vs. Shempp, the
Supreme Court stated that "the Bible is worthy of study for
its literary and historical qualities alone."
The court went on to say in Stone
v. Grahmn that "the Bible may be constitutionally used in
an appropriate study of history, civilization, ethics, and the
like."
